Culture Fair: Celebrating the Diversity of Family

“It’s a Family Thing” has been the theme at San Marcos Academy this year, and one thing we know is that family do not come from just one place. In that spirit, we are hosting a Culture Fair for the Saturday, April 14th LEAD day. This event will showcase some of the different cultures our students represent.

At the last Culture Fair held on campus in 2014, our students shared information about the cultures of Brazil, Cameroon, Nigeria, Vietnam, China and Thailand. This year our students are highlighting India, Mexico, China, Nigeria, and Vietnam, while friends and family of the SMA community are representing the Czech Republic and South Korea.

What should students expect at the Culture Fair?

At the start of the LEAD day at 9 a.m., all students will meet at the Robinson Christian Center to view a fashion show of cultural attire. Advisory groups will then split off into different locations to view projects, sample foods, watch demonstrations and engage in other activities.

Among those giving demonstrations will be our local Kuk Sool Won of San Marcos. Fourth degree black belt Eric Morales will demonstrate Korean Martial Arts techniques for self-defense. Morales began practicing these techniques 24 years ago.

Karaoke will be set up for students to learn about the history behind this popular activity and have a chance to sing a song. Students from the Texas State University’s Grupo Folklorico Ocotochtli dance group will be coming to demonstrate and teach us some moves.

The day will end before noon with a tradition from India presented by junior Qaiynat Jassani. Known as “Holi,”  this tradition is where participants throw and smear powdered paint at or on one other to strengthen or mend relationships they have with their friends, family, or community members. This activity will take place on the lawn in front of the dining hall and students may bring an extra t-shirt or towel if they wish!

The Culture Fair is a joint collaboration between the Student Activities Department and the International Student Organization.
