JROTC Federal Awards 2019-20

Each year local, regional, and national organizations provide a number of awards to our Junior ROTC cadets to recognize them for their performance and accomplishments throughout the school year. We are deeply grateful to these organizations for their outstanding support of our program. The awards would have been presented by LTC Lenny Cianciotto and CSM Vincent McCormick on April 30 during a special ceremony, but that event was canceled due to the pandemic. Following are a list of the cadets and their awards; congratulations to all these outstanding cadets.

Each year we select a Cadet of the Year based on overall leadership potential, program participation, academic standing, military bearing and general cadet knowledge.  This year’s Cadet of the Year is Cadet Staff Sergeant Conner Irwin.

The Military Order of Foreign Wars (MOFW) Medal for Leadership is awarded to a Cadet demonstrating exceptional Leadership in Junior ROTC, the school and the community.  By setting a strong example, the awardee has distinguished himself among peers and demonstrated unique character that is in keeping with the highest values or our Nation and our school.  This year’s recipient is Cadet Captain Garret Clairday.

Dayana Hubbard

Each year the United States Daughters of 1812 recognize a Cadet who has demonstrated qualities of academic excellence, leadership, military discipline, dependability, patriotism and upright character of speech and habits which exemplify the ideals upon which our nation was founded.  This year’s recipient is Cadet Staff Sergeant Dayana Hubbard.

Timothy Murphy

The Order of Daedalians is a fraternity of commissioned military pilots from all military services. Each year they recognize Cadets who demonstrate patriotism, love of country, and service to our nation. This year’s recipient is Cadet Corporal Timothy Murphy.

The American Veterans (AMVETS) medal is presented to a Cadet for outstanding leadership, school involvement, academic achievement, and demonstrating a high degree of military bearing.  This year’s recipient is Cadet First Sergeant Doyce Gore III.

David Britton 

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) recognizes Cadets for demonstrating outstanding achievement, leadership potential, patriotism, military bearing and growth potential.  This year’s recipient is Cadet Captain David Britton.

Julius Wong

The Military Order of the Purple Heart Medal is awarded to Cadet Captain Julius Wong for leadership potential, selfless service and loyalty to the Corps of Cadets and the Academy.

Cole Krackau

The Reserve Officer Association recognizes a Cadet for academic achievement; for having contributed to advancing the objectives of the Junior ROTC program, which include outstanding dedication to citizenship, knowledge of civic responsibility, military orientation, self-discipline and a sound work ethic. This year’s recipient is Cadet Corporal Cole Krackau.

Lyndon Fischer

The Military Officers’ Association of America Junior ROTC Medal is presented to a Cadet who is in good academic standing; of high moral character; demonstrates a high degree of loyalty to the unit, school, and country; and demonstrates exceptional potential for military leadership. Cadet Corporal Lyndon Fischer is this year’s recipient.

The Non-commissioned Officer Association award is presented annually to each unit’s most outstanding Cadet Noncommissioned Officer during the past school year. The Cadet must have consistently exhibited the best military bearing, personal appearance, deportment, and leadership ability in his/her unit.  This year’s recipient is Cadet Command Sergeant Major Carter Pruitt.

The Scottish Rites of Freemasonry Junior ROTC Award goes to Cadet Captain Daven Meredith for demonstrating leadership excellence and Americanism.

The National Sojourners Award goes to Cadet First Sergeant Ian Faris for his demonstrated leadership potential and promotion of Americanism on and off campus.

Liam Adcock and Caleb Guenther

American Legion Post 144 of San Marcos sponsors two cadet awards each year for scholastic and military excellence.

The award for Military Excellence is awarded to a Cadet who is in the top 25 percent of the class in academic and ROTC subjects and must have demonstrated outstanding qualities in military leadership, discipline, character, and citizenship.  This year’s recipient is Cadet Corporal Liam Adcock.

The award for Academic Excellence goes to a Cadet with a high degree of academic achievement, top 25 percent of the class in ROTC classes, and demonstrated qualities of leadership. The Cadet must actively participate in related student activities, such as student organizations, community activities, and sports. Cadet Major Caleb Guenther is this year’s recipient.

Gabby Cianciotto

The Daughters of the American Revolution recognize Cadets who have demonstrated loyalty and patriotism and earned a record of military and scholastic achievement during their participation in an ROTC program. Earlier this semester, Cadet Staff Sergeant Gabby Cianciotto was recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution at a luncheon along with other area recipients.

The Military Order of World Wars Medal is given to the cadet who has demonstrated the most overall improvement in military and scholastic studies during the school year.  This year’s recipient is Cadet Captain Aaron Emerich.

The Sons of the American Revolution Award goes to a Cadet who demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities, military bearing and all around excellence in JROTC activities. This year’s recipient is Cadet Captain Cody Massey

Doyce Gore III

When Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio closed in 1973, many of its cadets transferred to San Marcos Baptist Academy to complete their schooling.  In 1995, the alumni of Peacock Military Academy established a cadet award in honor of the close association between the two schools. The award is given to the Cadet selected to be the next commander of the Bear Battalion.  This year’s recipient is Cadet First Sergeant Doyce Gore III

The Superior Cadet Awards will be announced at the Academy Awards. This event can be viewed live from our SMA YouTube page or our Facebook page at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 8, or any time after that.

Dr. Brian N. Guenther was named President of San Marcos Academy by the Board of Trustees July 17 and will assume his duties on Aug. 1. Dr. Guenther will succeed Jimmie W. Scott, who is retiring as President and moving into a new role as President Emeritus. Scott will assist with the transition of the new President while working in the Development Office through Dec. 31, 2018. In Praise of the yearbook

“A yearbook is a love letter a school writes to itself.” This line comes from author Pat Conroy’s famous tribute to a school’s yearbook, which he compares to a “shining novel” that tells the whole story of one year in the life of a school community. “It is one of the most important books you will ever own,” Conroy concludes, “because it contains all the memories and dreams and anxieties and sorrows and triumphs of this single year of your life.” I agree wholeheartedly with Conroy. Some of the Academy yearbooks that reside in the Alumni Director’s Office. Yearbooks have always intrigued me. I enjoy looking through my parents’ books from the 1950’s and being amazed by how young they looked. Mom in her cheerleader uniform . . . Dad celebrating a big win in basketball . . . their youthfulness frozen in time, providing for me a peek into the lives they led and the adventures they enjoyed long before I came along. Teacher Training: SMA Takes the Lead

Teacher training is something San Marcos Academy takes very seriously. To ensure the the quality and professionalism of faculty members, SMA has created and is now implementing a unique teacher training course that utilizes proven materials developed by AdvancED , the parent organization of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Of the 34,000 AdvancED educational institutions that enroll about 20 million students nationwide, SMA is the only school to develop a full state-of-the-art professional development training course using ELEOT material. The Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool (ELEOT) is a process used to train AdvancED classroom observers during accreditation visits. Although a handful of schools have used the AdvancED training videos to train their teachers, none has developed a full training course using those videos as part of a program specifically designed for classroom teachers.
